Sinosemic, based in Taizhou's Jiangyan district, was recently recognized as a potential unicorn enterprise in Jiangsu province due to its strong innovation capabilities.
Today, Sinosemic's clients include all major Chinese optical communication equipment manufacturers, the vast majority of internet companies, and most of the world's top 10 optical module enterprises. The company has shipped over 25 million 25G VCSEL chips and 12 million 56G VCSEL chips, ranking first in the industry.
Before 2021, China's VCSEL chip market was dominated by imported products. These high-end semiconductor laser chips, which involve disciplines such as materials science, optics, and thermodynamics, had long been considered a technological bottleneck.
From the start, Sinosemic chose the most challenging IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer) model — integrating chip design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. Although costly, this approach allows for close collaboration across all stages, ensuring stable processes and reliable product performance.

"Chip fabrication is like precision sculpting in a microscopic world," said Yao Shun, the company's technical director. Each of the 300 production steps is crucial to the chip's reliability and stability. The team has overcome multiple technical challenges and is now accelerating the development of 224G VCSEL chips, which will meet next-generation data centers' demands for ultra-high bandwidth and low power consumption.
Sinosemic is just one example of success. To date, Taizhou has supported over 100 high-growth technology enterprises. "We adopt a 'one enterprise, one policy' approach, creating growth profiles and assigning service specialists to respond to each company's evolving needs — from talent recruitment to market expansion," said Wan Fang, director of the high-tech department of the Taizhou Science and Technology Bureau.
"By building a supportive innovation ecosystem, Taizhou has overcome resource constraints and made steady progress toward technological self-reliance," said He Jun, director of the bureau. "We will continue to strengthen collaboration among industry, academia, and research sectors and to develop new growth drivers in semiconductors and biopharmaceuticals, supporting Jiangsu's goal of becoming a leading global innovation hub."
