Taizhou, called as Haiyang by Qin Dynasty, Hailing by Han Dynasty and Taizhou by Southern Tang Dynasty, has a history of more than 2,100 years. During the Southern Tang Dynasty (AD 937), it became a state from a county, known as "Taizhou", which blended the charm of Wu, Chu and Yue, and brought together the fashion of Yangze River and Huai River. For thousands of years, favorable weather, stability and harmony let Taizhou be known as auspicious land. In Taizhou, the humanities are gathered together, and the famous people are born. Shi Nai’an, Zheng Banqiao and Mei Lanfang were outstanding representatives. There are many places of historic interest and scenic beauty, such as Guangxiao Temple, Chongru Temple, Chenghuang Temple, Anding College, Rishe Garden, Wanghai Building and Meilanfang Memorial Hall and the Memorial Hall of the Birthplace of the People's Navy, inheriting the history. And there are many ecological natural sceneries including Zhen Lake Wetland, Qiandao Cauliflower, Water Forest, Tiandehu Park and ancient ginkgo forest.

Known as the "important ferry, throat county”, Taizhou is an important ferry connecting the north and south and the gateway to central Jiangsu. More than 700 years ago, Marco Polo traveled to Taizhou and praised, “this city is not very big, but there are many kinds of worldly happiness." Taizhou is an important node city of the Shanghai metropolitan area, the Nanjing metropolitan area and the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou metropolitan area. The superior location and the integrated structure of roads, railways, water and air highlight the important position of the northern wing of the Yangtze River Delta.
