Study Abroad in Australia: Interpretation of New and Old Policies
updated on :2010-09-29 14:32

Introduced by Cheng Rong, who is in charge of Australian Department of Golden Sunshine Overseas Affairs Service Center, that the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship implemented new policies on new general skilled immigration since September 1, 2007. Changes are as follows:

1. Requirement for a higher level of English proficiency for skilled immigrants;

2. Extra marks added for skilled immigrants with good knowledge of English;

3. More attention to work experience;

4. Temporary work visas are introduced for graduates;

5. The process for receiving a skilled immigration visa is simplified.

A&A International Education expresses its view: the new Australian policy on general skilled migration has higher requirements, but in fact is beneficial to overseas students.

Applying for immigration is allowed with 50 points vocational programs: the old policy only allows doctoral graduates majoring in 50 points vocations to apply for immigration in Australia, which forces most graduates majoring in 50 points vocations to apply on leave after graduation. The new policy prescribes that the overseas students in Australia studying 50 points degree programs of skilled occupations listed in the skilled occupation list (SOL) can apply for the overseas students’ general skilled immigration visa.
